Some truths arrive before language.
Before we can explain them.
Before we can justify them.
Before we are ready to say them out loud.
Music has always known this.
There are songs that reach me long before I understand why. I don’t analyze them. I don’t dissect the lyrics or try to make meaning immediately. I just feel the way my body responds. The way something loosens. The way something tightens. The way a familiar ache rises to the surface and asks to be acknowledged.
This is listening before language.
Music bypasses the part of us that wants to explain everything neatly. It doesn’t ask us to be articulate or composed. It doesn’t require a polished story. It simply meets us where we are and tells the truth in a way our nervous system recognizes instantly.
I’ve learned to trust that response.
When a song stays with me, when it repeats in my head or settles somewhere in my chest, I know it’s pointing to something real. Something I may not have words for yet. Something I might still be circling, still gathering the courage to name.
This is why music has always been part of my creative life.
Before I write, I listen.
Before I understand, I feel.
Before I speak, I let the sound tell me what my body already knows.
There is a kind of honesty that doesn’t arrive through logic or analysis. It arrives through resonance. Through rhythm. Through the quiet recognition of “yes, that’s it” without needing to explain what it is just yet.
Music teaches us that truth doesn’t always come wrapped in sentences. Sometimes it comes as a hum. A melody. A single line that lands harder than an entire paragraph ever could.
And when we allow ourselves to listen that way, without rushing to translate or justify, we begin to trust our own inner knowing again.
The words will come.
They always do.
But first, there is listening.
Some of the songs that accompany this listening are gathered here.
