A Window In My Wallet

I found something recently that I’ve carried around for years, a little fortune from a fortune cookie, tucked in my wallet so long the ink now shines through its softening paper.

“A house without books is like a room without windows.”

I kept it because it felt like it was speaking directly to me, little-girl-me and grown-woman-me at the same time. Books have always been my windows. My way out and my way in. My way to make sense of the world and my place inside it.
